Government
All civilizations, past and present (and future too), need some type of government to survive. Ancient Mesopotamia was no different. The Sumerians believed that the kings were chosen by the gods. The kings enforced laws, collected taxes, made sure irrigation systems were maintained, and lead the city-state's army. Each city state needed an army because the city-states were constantly fighting over boundaries.
The Sumerian army was made up of professional soldiers and temporary city-state soldiers. Some of these soldiers fought on foot and others drove chariots, or wheeled vehicles pulled by horses.
Officials helped the kings do their duties. Governors ruled over towns and scribes helped record laws (the Sumerians were the first to develop a written system of laws.). A special group of officials patrolled the canals, looking for damage and making sure people did not take water illegally.
