The Akkadian Empire
The Akkadians conquered Mesopotamia in 2300 B.C.E. Led by a great king named Sargon, they started the Akkadian Empire.
Sargon was a strong king and a skilled general. The Akkadian Empire was created through powerful military strategies. Sargon taught his soldiers to fight in tight formations. In the front of the formation stood men carrying shields. Spear-equipped soldiers stood behind them. The soldiers carrying spears extended their weapons between the shields.
Sargon's military skills allowed him to easily conquer all of Mesopotamia, including Sumer.
But an empire that size was not easy to control. In order to maintain power, Sargon used political strategies. The walls in cities were destroyed to make it harder for people to rebel. The governors of city-states were made sure that they were loyal to the king. Sargon became the first king to demand that his sons ruled on after his death.
