Assyrian Empire Life
Powerful kings ruled the Assyrian Empire. Kings were believed to be special beings. So, grand palaces were built for them.
Ordinary people farmed. The Assyrians dug canals to irrigate the land and keep it futile. Some of the earliest aqueducts, or pipes/channels that bring water from distant places, were built in the Assyrian Empire. One aqueduct brought water from 30 miles away!
Assyrian craftspeople made bas-reliefs, or a two-dimensional sculpture in which the image stands out from a flat surface. These bas-reliefs were used in palaces. Ivory decorated thrones, beds, chairs, and doors.
The Assyrian Empire lasted a good 300 years. It stretched from Egypt to the Persian Gulf. But a territory this large became too hard to control. They were destroyed by a group consisting of Babylonians, Scythians, and the Medes.
