- Fights became so intense, they led to bloodshed and killing
- There we no natural barriers to protect the people
- Sumerian built large walls to protect their cities
- Made moats around city walls to prevent enemies from entering
- People lived in houses inside the city walls
- Farms were outside the walls; incase of attack, they would go inside the city
- Walled cities were like independent countries, called city-states
- By 3000 B.C.E., most Sumerians lived in city-states
